Mr. S. G. 'Smith, MJ.P., who was id New Plymouth for the week end, returned Wellington by the mail train to-day.

The Rev. R. Franklin was formally instituted vicar of Hawera at the morning service on Sunday,, the induction service being performed by'the Bishop of Wellington.

Mr. W. E. Best, president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and the secretary, Mr. D. G. Johnston, will visit New Plymouth on August 8 next, and will address a meeting of members of the local branch; Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson, Gover-nor-General of Australia, accompanied by Lady Helen Munro-Ferguson, intends to pay a visit to New Zealand, and will be in Auckland for a day or two 'toward the end of next month. At the meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools on Monday night, a resolution of sympathy was passed with Mr. E. P. Webster in his indisposition, and • a hope expressed for his speedy and complete recovery. It was reported that Mr. Webster whs, making satisfactory progress.

Mr. and Mrs. H. J%, Abraham, of Stratford, left by Monday morning’s mail, train for Auckland, and at the edd of the week will sail for the South Sea Islands. The trip, which is being taken for the benefit of Mrs. Abraham’s health, is .expected to last about a month.—Post.

Mr. Alfred Stanley Hill, second mate on the steamer Rimu, who was lost overboard during the voyage from Onehunga to New Plymouth last week, was the eldest son of Mr. A. E. Hill, of Huia, Manukau, Heads. - M r . Hill, who had been at sea for 16 years, served with the New Zealand Seventh Reinforcements in France.

Mr. D. F. Saxton, who has been engaged in the preparatory department of the New Plymouth Boys High School, has accepted an appointment with the W’aitaki Boys’ High School, Oaraaru, and leaves New Plymouth about the middle of August. The board on Monday accepted the resignation, and congratulated Mr. Saxton on his appointment and wished him success.
