JERSEY CATTLE.

A PROPOSED BREEDERS’ SALE,

A _ special meeting of the Taranaki branch of the Jersey Brooders’ Association was held at the New Plymouth Soldiers’ Club on Saturday afternoon. Mr. H, B. Lcpper, president, occupied tho chair, and there was a good attendance of members.

The secretary explained that the object of tho meeting was to discuss the | proposed sale to bo held under tho auspices of the association. It would bo I remembered that a resolution was pass-1 ed in September last to tho effort that ' the committee arrange such a sale. The committee had gone carefully into tho whole question and recommended that tho sale take place in October next, that it be confined to maiden heifers and to bulls, irrespective of ago, that only members of tho branch bo entitled to catalogue animals, that with a view to giving confidence to prospective buyers an inspection committee be appointed to seo that all animals were in good, cindition and that they were reasonably true to type. Another object in holding the sale was that the branch might, Taiso a fund to ba spent in advertising Jersey cattle, in providing prizea to bo competed for at the show, and in the general advancement of the breed. With this end in view the committeto proposed to make special arrangements for tho auctioneering, bo that instead of the usual commission going to any particular firm of auctioneers it would remain ift the hands of tho branch for the purposes already outlined. The committee had come to a tentative arrangoment in this connection and if its recommendations were agreed to ho thought the branch should bo able to make quite a good sum out of it. The fact that it was proposed not to put the sale through an auctioneering firm meant, of course, that they would have to make special arrangements for financing buyers who mjght want tomporarv accommodation. This matter had been gone into by tho committee and arrangements made with the bank That would enable this to be done. It was proposed 1 to hold tho sale on tho showgrounds at Waiwakaiho. A lengthy discussion ensued, during the course of which it was explained that the committee expected a catalogue of at least 100 animals. Already many entries had been promised. With reference to the auctioneering, the idea of the committee was to pay a special fee to Mr. C. Fairbrother. This too would mean having to take out an auctioneer’s licence, the cost of which would probably’ be., £l6. With reference to the question of finance it was proposed that those members of. tho branch who were willing to do so should sign a joint and several guarantee and oh this the bank would advance, the customafy wta qf interest being chargqd of cohrse. , Tjhe chairman and secretary both stressed tho point that no difficulty wfts anticipated in this connection. On tho other hand, several members did not appear to be impressed with the proposal and Mr. J. Hale advocated placing the conduct of the sale in tho hands of a recognised firm of auctioneers and that if funds wore required by the Waned for advertising purposes they should bo raised either by increasing tho annual subscription or by straight out donations. Eventually tho meeting adopted the recommendation of the committee, with tho following amendment: “That 'it be. a sale of maiden heifers, heifers carrying their first calf and bulls of any ago.’’ The secretary expressed tho hope that ■members would acquaint him as early as possible of tbeir entries and thus facilitate the preparation of the catalogue.
