THE YACHT RACE.

HEAT TO BE SAILED TO-DAY.

SHAMROCK’S SKIPPER CHANGED

By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright.

NEW YORK, July 19

Mr. Burton will give place to another skipper for the Shamrock. This was decided upon after a series of conferences between Sir Thomas Lipton, Cap* tain H. L. Garrett (the Royal Ulster Club’s representative), Mr. Charles Nicholson (designer of the Shamrock), and. Colonel Duncaij F. Neill (Sir Thos. Lipton’s personal representative). It is jfrobable Mr. Neill or Mr. Nicholson will command in the next race on Tuesday. , . There is .much criticism of the way the Shamrock was handled, and the widespread opinion is that the Shamrock was not sailed in a way to show its best ability. The climax came on Saturday, when the sloop lost much ground because of changes in its headsail. The Resolute’s skipper, Mr. Charles Adams, outmanoeuvred Mr. Burton in both races.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

[The London t Observer recently remarked; —-A pqint of particular interest in the contest is the selection of an amateur skipper for the challenger. Mr. W. P. Burton will.carry with him the confidence of all yachtsmen in this country. Ho has a fine record. He has owned fifteen yachts of various types and sizes, including 'five in the 52ft. and 15-inetrc classes, which always provided the keenest racing. His last vessel was tho Octavia in the 19metre class. Ho always sailed his boats himself, and has taken part in over a thousand races in yachts of his own. . In addition to being an excellent helmsman, he always inspires confidence in his crow, which is always carefully selected. All other things equal, it would be an exceptionally clever skipper and smart crew that would beat him in tho handling of a boat.]

CA'PTAIN NOT CHANGED

(Received July 20, 10.20 am.) NEW YORK, July \9. Captain Burton has not been superseded in the command of the Shamrock. —Aus.-N.Z. ‘Cable Assn.
