GOLF.

(By “All-Square.”) Tho New Plymouth Club Is getting a most generous response from members m reply to tho request for donations of tho whole or part of the. Accrued debenture interest duo to them. Now that the war is over the club should make very groat progress. As far as tho course itself is concerned, there aro few bettor kept 18-holo courses in New Zealand. Mr. G .H. Morgan, formerly manager of tho Union Steam Ship Company’s branch office at Newcastle was presented with an inscribed silver entree dish by Mr. H. Berkly on behalf of tho members of the Waratah Golf Club at Newcastle. Mr. Morgan was recently transferred to the Sydney office. Tho Sydney Sunday News reports that tho Waratah golf links at Newcastle have been sold for £17,500. Tho club will continue to utilise tho links for two years on payment of rates and taxes. It is interesting to note that some years ago this property of 70 acres was bought by the club for about £I2OO. Its proximity to the Newcastle Steel Works probably accoifitUs for its greatly increased value. Mr. Morgan, who was one of tho founders of the club, was a member of committee when the purchase was made. New Zealand Sporting Life, the first issue of which appeared in May and which promises to be a valuable aid to all classes of sport in New Zealand, has a most interesting full-page frontispiece of tho competitors in the first golf championship played on tho Hutt racecourse in 1897. Tho group includes Lr. Gossett, of Christchurch, who was that year’s champion, the two Prydes, Arthur Gillies, Wilder, J. Webster, A. D. Duncan and other of the earlier players in New Zealand. Dr. Gossett learnt his golf at Westward Ho ami is mentioned (for his putting 1 think) in Varden’s book. An endeavour is being made to obtain a copy of this group for tho club-house at Waiwakaiho. Players at Waiwakaiho are reminded that they should shut all gates. The lessees of the property may suffer considerable loss if sheep got through from one paddock to another. The programme for the New Zealand Championship meeting to be held this year at Hamilton from September 13 to 18, is to hand. Most complete arrangements have been made and intending competitors should .at once notify the secretary so that Hie necessary accommodation tan be scoured. Already many of the leading players have scoured rooms. An interesting programme has been drawn up, including: the Amateur Championship of New Zealand, Open Championship for New Zealand, and a professional match (match play), bogie and medal handicaps, a foursome bogie handicap, and the InterClub Challenge Vane teams’ match complete tho programme. The number of amateur competitors may ho restricted to 72. Mr. A. E. Webb is the lion, secretary, and will bo pleased to arrange accommodation. Entries close on September 1. BREWSTER CUP FINAL. * The final for the Brewster Cup was played on the New Plymouth Club’s links on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs. Nicholson beat Mrs. Johns by 2 up end 1. Both players received a handicap of 19, so that, they played on level terms. The game was closely contested, and some good play was witnessed. Mrs. Nicholson did the round in 100 and Mrs. Johns was four strokes move. This is the first season the cup has been played for, it having been presented to the club this year by the ladies’ captain (Miss Brewster), and it will be held by Mrs. Nicholson for a year.
