COURSING.

COMBINED MEETING. The meeting which is to be held at New Plymouth on June- 30 and July 1 under the auspices of the Egmont' and New Plymouth Clubs gives every indication of proving exceptionally successful. On Thursday hist a "working bee” was organised amongst the local coursing enthusiasts who spent the afternoon in preparing the grounds for the forthcoming meeting. Amongst other improvements effected is the erection of a permanent baulk, the need of which was only too apparent at the last meeting. , The baulk will ho covered with canvas, so that when the Imre reaches the escape (and there are now no less than 3‘i) the dog’s view of the hare is hidden and “pussy” is safe home. From this it will be seen that the number of “kills” should prove infinitesimal. The length of the course has been extended to 600 yards, so that with a start of SO yards, the odds are all in favour of the hare. Thanks to the zeal of the caretaker. Mr. C. Haskell, the grounds are in splendid condition, likewise the hares which are a particularly strong lot. If anything will make them “lit,” well, Iho abundant supply of carrots turnips and oats, which they are supplied with should have the desired effect. Mr. J. Jejikinson has been appointed judge and Mr. F. Doughty slipper. The Waterloo Oup meeting is attracting large entries from all parts of tile Dominion. The Club has been fortunate in securing the services of Mr. F. M'Connoll, of Wellington, who is recognised as being the best .slipper in New Zealand. It is quite within the hounds of possibility that the Australasian .Waterloo of lt)2t will bo held at New Plymouth. It is recognised by the lead ing coursing men in the Dominion that the New Plymouth grounds are second to none for tho holding of such a, meeting and a definite reply on the point is expected very shortly.
