MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

THEFT OF AN OVERCOAT. A youth named Rowland Tallis Eagar pleaded guilty before Mr. T. A. B. Baily, this morning to a charge ol having stolen a trench coat, valued at £4, the property of Kenneth If. Andrews. Detective Fitzgibbon prosecuted, and recounted the circumstances. The coat disappeared from a motor-car during a dance at the East End Pavilion on the night of January 6. Eagar, who was employed in racing stables, was afterwards seen wearing it in the street, and on being interrogated said he had bought it from a companion, and produced a receipt which had been issued to the companion by an outfitter for payment for a trench coat. Eager’s parents resided in Wellington. His Worship said lie did not like the way in which accused had lied to the police and bolstered up the lie with a false receipt. If this had not been his first offence he would havo been sent to gaol. As it was he would bo convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. During the first six months he would be required to report each week to Detective Fitzgibbon.
