The estate of the Hon. Alfred Dearkin is valued at £28,830. Mr. L. B. Rowe, of Opotiki, has taken up his duties of relieving manager of the Union Bank, New- Plymouth, during the absence of Mr, Jackson.

Mrs. Cowem, wife of Mr. William Coweru, an old settler of South Taranaki, died at Devonport, Auckland, on December 9.

Mr. L. Riera., a popular member of Mr. Newton King’s s’taff, who has been on a trip to the Old Country, returned by the Pakeha, which reached Wellington on Monday. Mr. Walter Brodie, who has been promoted from the management of thd Thames '‘’branch of tho bank of New Zealand to take charge at New Plymouth arrived on Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Blundell returned by the Rinm on Tuesday from a trip north, visiting Helensville, Dargaville, Russell, Whangarei and Auckland. During their ten weeks’ tour they had only one wet day. Mr. P. J. H. White has been nominated by tho Taranaki Education Board as representative of the districts of Taranaki, Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Nelson on the Committee of Advice of the Wellington Training College. The Taranaki Education Board decided to-day to place on record its high appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the board by Mr. F. W. Sand ford, woodwork instructor, and he was also granted three weeks’ leave of absence on full pay. At the Taranaki Education Board meeting to-day the chairman extended a cordial welcome to Mr. F. Hoskin, who was recently elected a member of the board to fill” the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. T. Buchanan. Mr. Hoskin suitably replied. Police-Sergeant Trehey, who has been away from duty for twelve months in consequence of the effects of influenza, has been examined by a medical board and certified ns unfit for further service. He is therefore to retire as from tho end of the present year.
