A cable from New York says the Ottawa correspondent of the Times states that Sir Robert Borden will probably retire from public life owing to ili health.

Dr. Truby King, the New Zealand socialist in infancy and maternity questions, arrived at Perth by the Morea on November 21, and after addressing a child welfare conference resumed his voyage the following day. Mr. C. H. Hughes, for tjie past three year's manager for the XJnion Steam Ship Company, Ltd. at Melbourne, has been appointed manager of the company’s Sydney branch. Mr. Vai. Johnson, at present in charge in Sydney, will take over the managership in Melbourne.

Major F. W. Sandford, woodwork instructor under the Taranaki Education Board for the past 12 years, is retiring on superannuation at the end of the year. Yesterday he paid his final visit to the Waitara Convent School, whore he has been teaching for the past two years. The boys took advantage of the occasion to make a small presentation to Major Sandford, Master Dudley, on their benalf, banding him a pocket wallet, with expressions of goodwill. At the meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday evening the Mayor extended a cord.al welcome to Councillor Sykes and remarked that his previous experience of local body work and the knowledge he had no doubt gleaned during-'his recent travels abroad would be of great value to the council. Councillor Sykes, in responding said it was sometimes said that New Plymouth was a slow place, but he had yet to learn of any borough of the size of New Plymouth that had launched out and had the municipal undertakings this borough had. New Plymouth, he firmly believed was going •to make great, progress during the next few years. The outlook was exceedingly bright for the borough and any assistance he could give in this direction would always be forthcoming.

Mr. H. B. Gray, who has severed his connection with the Wellington Meat Export Co., Ltd., to take np the position of general manager of the Taranaki Fanners’ Bloat Co., Ltd., was on Friday afternoon presented by the staff of tho Bleat Export Company with a silver rose bowl and a case of pipes as a small token of the esteem in which he wasi held by the staff. Blr. Sladdcn, in making the presentation, expressed the regret of himself and the staff at losing Blr. Gray, at the same time congratulating him on his promotion, and wishing him every success and happiness in his new sphere. Congratulatory messages were read from the buyers and members of the Kakariki staff, who were unable to be present. Blr. Gray suitably responded. The gathering concluded with cheers for Blr. and Blrs. Gray.
