QUARTERLY MEETING. Tho quarterly meeting of the Tara-! naki Chamber of Commerce was lieldj at the Soldiers’ Club on Friday even-; ing, Mr. A. Goldwator (president) oc-j cupying- the chair. There - were also present: Messrs. AA r . J. Penn, S. V'. Shaw, D. K. Morrison, F. S. Johns, E. P. Webster, F. Jackson, A. W. Webster, J. T. Griffin, H. Cocker, A. M'Hardy, L. A. Nolan, L. B. Webster, W. E. Bendall, F. Hooker, D. Penman, j. Clarke and P. E. Stainton. Apologies wore received from Messrs. Newton King, AV. Amhury, P. Jackson, R. J. Deare, and J. D. Sole. RATLAVAY COMMUNICATION. Messrs. Dansey and Gavey, Auckland, wrote with reference to the favourable conditions existing in Taranaki for tho establishment of light railways and asf?ed for any information as to the prospects of constructing any such railways. With the above letter a communication was read from tho Clifton County Council urging tho necessity for the; survey and authorisation of a railway. between AVaitara and Tc Kuiti and suggesting that the counties of Awa-j kino, Clifton and AVaitomo form themselves into a railway league for tho furtherance of this proposal. It was decided to acknowledge tho letter of Messrs. Dansey and Gavey j and to forward copy of tho Clifton ■ County Council’s letter. AA’it h reference to the Clifton Council’s resolution tho chamber unanimously decided to give its support to tho suggestion that a survey of the proposed route bo made. Correspondence was also received from the Auckland Railways® 1 League with reference to proposed propaganda work in tho direction of urging railway! construction to link up the Auckland, | Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki districts., and stating that a Parliamentary tour was being arranged from Auckland to Napier. It was decided to inform tho Auck--1 land Railway League that when a Pari liamentary tour of Taranaki was proposed the chamber would be pleased to co-operate. A letter was received from the Canterbury Chamber with reference to railway construction and management, their idea being that in place of a" general manager there should ho a board of control, which would ho responsible to Parliament. It was suggested that tho chamber pass a resolution in favour of tho proposal. Mr. Penn said-he felt it was a good idea, and that it might lead to considerable improvement in tho management of tho railways. At the same time so far as tho details of the proposals wore concerned there might be need for very careful consideration and probably amendment. Members generally were agreed that there was considerable dissatisfaction with reference to the management of the railways, and it was decided to instruct tho chamber's delegate to the annual conference of associated chambers to give general sympathetic support to tli© proposal. merco forwarded copies of an address by Mr. S. 11. Dickinson, principal of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, with reference to education, industry, and reconstruction. Mr. T. E. French, of Palmerston North, wrote asking what holidays were being observed in New Plymouth for the coming Christmas and New Year.*— The secretary explained that he had supplied the information. Other correspondence and business of a routine nature was dealt with and the meeting adjourned.
