Colonel Foster, of Preston, England* is on a short visit to New Plymouth. Mr. A. B. Macdonald, well known in local musical circles, returns to New Plymouth to-night. A cable from Sydney says Sydney University lias created, a new 1 chair o*. Professor of Medicine, to which Dr. A. B. Mills has been appointed. A New York cablegram 'reports/ the death of Henry Erick, the steel king, the associate of Carnegie, from ptomaine poisoning. Mr. A. W. Morgan, at one time assistant traffic manager at Auckland Railway Station, has been appointed district traffic manager at Invercargill. Mrs. Peddie, of New Plymouth, has received advice that her son, Roy, is on board the transport Bimutaka, which is expected at Auckland about December 27. • A cable from Melbourne says that Melbourne University will confer the honorary degree of C.C.D. upon General Sir AV. B. Birdwood and General Monash in recognition of their war services. After speaking in different centres in the Oamaru district, Mr. Massey will go to Christchurch to-morrow. He will reach 'Wellington on Saturday morning, and leave by the Main Trunk tram the same day for Auckland. A London message reports the cffeath of Field-Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C., aged 81. Sir Evelyn entered the army in 1852 and served in the Crimea, in 1854-5. He later joined the army and gained the Victoria Cross in Indian lighting in 1859. He was also engaged in the Ashantee, Kaffir, Zulu and Transvaal wars 1879-81, and commanded the Niffi Expedition in 1894-5. The Governor-General and suite arrived at Reefton on Monday night, and were welcomed by the Mayor on behalf of the citizens. At an official welcome in the Town Hall yesterday morning, there was a large attendance. There was subsequently a luncheon. The Vice-Regal party proceeded to Hokitika, and later AVcstport, and join the Tutanekai this morning.—Press Association.
