MONKEY AMONG HATS.

EXCITEMENT IN AUCKLAND. “Harry Lauder” in name only, but none the less amusing when loose, a monkey that escaped Iron the yard to the rear of the Auckland Opera House, created considerable excitement by his antics, and drew an “audience” of close on 200 to in front of Smith and Caughey’s on Saturday morning, says the Star. Chained life was too much for “Harry” on a day like this, and with the adroitness that has always characterised his family, he unloosed the bonds that held him fast, and leaving without even saying as much as goodbye to his comrades left, and immediately made for on high. Very quickly he worked his way from the hack of Messrs. Smith and Caughey’s, and surreptitiously dived through an open window, and, behold, he was amongst the ladies of the hat department. Immediately he was in charge, and with a hiss that precedes more drastic action ho safeguarded himself, the while handling Dame Fashion’s latest models, but none seemed to suit, ■ and very quickly they were tossed in turn in all directions. Ere this someone had breathed the news to Daimio and Clark, of Fuller’s, and the former gentleman, owner of the intruder, was sent in pursuit, and in view of the hundreds, was daring the glass in the verandah of Smith and Caughey’s building to hold him, in an endeavour to finish “Harry’s” spell off the chain. By reconnoitring he had his “pet” (nobody else seemed to think it was theirs) scrambling along the corner building adjoining (the United Service Hotel), a lady in the establishment getting a surprise when she put her head out of one of the windows, only to withdraw it quickly as she caught sight of the “monk,” to the great enjoyment of the, crowd that kept at safe distance. The Owner kept on climbing, however, and just when he looked like making a captive of the monkey, he lost it. Jumping from the top of a ifall on to the footpath below it quietly surrendered itself to one of the bravest of the bunch, again to be put into captivity.
