At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Fertiliser Company, the report etated*”that the cost of the works was estimated 9-t £218,000, accounted for by the decreased purchasing power of the sovereign and the increased cost of materials. - The balance-sheet, to March 31 showed £17,544 for which there was no visible asset. This penditure covered 31 years, and was generally accounted for by preliminary expenses and brokerage. Generally epeaking, affairs were more satisfactory than anticipated by some shareholders. Dissatisfaction was expressed by southern delegates that the southern districts were net represented on the directorate. The explanation given was that this would' mean an. alteration in the articles of association. The directors were quite willing to make such provision as soon as possible. The report and balancesheet were adopted, and a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to the directors for the manner in which they had conducted the business of the company.

For certain lines of goods c.i.f. quotations 1 from Japan are based on freight rates of _2ss to 28s per ton. This low rate is limited a tramp steamer, but if Japanese shippers are prepared to operate on this basis now it looks as if they meant to capture Australian trade orders. At one time up to 418 s was the freight named for the same class of merchandise. The general cargo rat© per non-subsidised Japanese steamers is still 150 s per ton, against 280 s in July last, and by subsidised vessels 90s per ton. Japanese manufacturers’ representatives in Melbourne have indicated, says the Melbourne Argus, very low prices for some of their wares, and a fear has been expressed in business circles that dumping of Japanese goods in Australia may lake filafi®*
