SOUTH SEA MYSTERY.

—Si / CASTAWAYS SIGHTED.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright,

SAN FRANCISCO, May 17.

Captain Eidswag, of the bnrquentine Alta, from Melbourne, reports a South Sea mystery. Ho discovered unknown castaways, on Flint Island, in the Polynesian Group, where he was blown by storms. He made a futile attempt at rescue, trying to reach the marooned people in a lifeboat, which capsized in the swift tides among the treacherous reefs. He was forced to sail away two days later. The attention of the Alta’s crew was attracted by fires on the island, whereon several persons were discernible. Flint Island is farout of the trade routes.
