ELTHAM.

FROM OtTR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Jan. 23.—Tho annual meeting of the Eltham branch of the Overseas Club, held last Friday, whs well attended. The membership of the branch is about 160, and during the past year the sum of £7OO has boon collected. The zealous secretary (Mr. Hobs) ,is largely responsible for keeping the branch an active body, and in appreciation of his work he has been elected a life member. During tho meeting strong references were made to the harsh treatment accorded members of the Main Body who recently arrived homo on leave and who, after having their leave reduced to three weeks, found that their pay was stopped during their furlough. If the Overseas Club can stir up opposition to this cheese-paring action of the Defence Department it will do sufficient to justify its existence. The town and country are being thoroughly canvassed at present to raise subscriptions for a send-off to Mrs. Barnard. It is intended to present this patriotic worker with a purse of sovereigns and an -illuminated address. The Eltham Ladies’ Sewing Guild have recommenced work for tho year, and are takin gover the task of providing comforts for -the soldiers in the trenches, this work having hitherto been carried on by what was known as the Belgian Guild. As the' Opunake mail coach was crossing the Oeo Bridge on Saturday morning one of the back tyres hurst, causing the bus to swerve into the guard rail of the bridge. One of the passengers, Mrs. Horne, of the Dominion House,*''received a severe gash on tho leg from the glass of tho wind shield, and it will be some time before she will be able to resume her duties. Mr. Karlstrom, lately our sanitary inspector, broke his right arm on Saturday lest. While engaged at Mr. AVilIdiison’s residence he fell from a plank, over which he was wheeling a barrow, landing on his arm. The unfortunate man is suffering /a good deal, of pain, hut is able to move about. Private B. Flavall, of Botokare, was given a farewell social and presentation when home from Trentham on his final leave last week.
