WAITARA.

PBOU OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Sept. 6. —The recent hoods are responsible for the formation of some quicksands on the beach adjoining Mr.. Birdling’s property. Mr. Pom. Roberts had an exciting experience lastweek, when he found that his team of three horses and dray were sinking. In spite of the frantic struggles of the animals they were unable to extricate themselves, and Mr. Roberts decided to go for assistance, expecting on his return to find the horses and dray had vanished. Mr. R. Tate was found, and came to his assistance with three horses and managed to get the horses and dray on to firm ground, after they had been in the'quicksand for fully an hour. Quite recently a horse and rider got into difficulties at the same spot. The Waitara East Seaside Improvement Society are about to plant lupin seeds on the sandhills for the purpose of consolidating the sand, and in order to break the monotony of colour which prevails on the other side of the river, whore the yellow variety only is grown,' the blue as well as the yellow is being sown. When in due course these come into bloom they will be a sight of great beauty. Mr. H. H. Jury, of Tikorangi, met with an accident a week or two ago from which he has now only partially recovered.
