HUIRANGI.

(From a Correspondent.) April 29. —One of the most enjoyable gatherings ever held in the district took place on Tuesday, April 20, when the settlers held their annual picnic and dance. The weather was all that could ho desired, and everything passed off successfully. The early part of the aftonion was taken up with races, etc., for the children; when every child received a prize. At 3.30 the children adjourned to the hall for tea, and did justice to air the nice things provided for them. The later part of the afternoon was spent in races for the adults. The following were the prize-winners in their respective races:-—Young ladies’ race. Miss I. Alexander 1, Miss Hutcheson 2; married ladies’ race, Mrs. C. Young 1, Mrs. H. Sarten 2; young men’s race, Mr. A. Old 1, Air. H. Old 2; married men’s race, Mr. C. Young; ladies’ nail driving, Airs. R. Giddy; ladies’ stopping the chain, Aliss Hutcheson; gents’ stepping the chain, Air. S. Sarlen ; ladies’ race, Mrs. H. Sarten ; gents’ race, Mr. Old 1, Mr. Giddy 2. Mr. U. G. AA'clls 3; chase for a bride, Air. A. Old Master Laurie Lovoridgc 1, Master AA'illie Lovoridge 2. Great excitement was caused amongst all when" several of those present competed in ’‘Cutting the Kaiser’s head off.” It was obvious to all that a few of our ladies were far more skilled in this ghastly business than were any of the Gentlemen who competed. and Aliss P.‘ ATieoIL ' Airs. J. Wheatley, Airs. YV. Niroll and Airs. R. Turnbull, the successful competitors, would soon become V.C. heroes-if given a real opportunity. At 7.30 the hall was cleared for dancing, and quite a clWd of dancers rolled up from AA'aitara, Tikorangi and Leppercon. During the evening a waltzing competition took place, the judges being Mrs. H. Old (of Auckland), Messrs. CV Smith and J. Taylor (of AVaitara). The first heat was won by Air. H. Alexander and Aliss Hutcheson, the second by Mr. AV. Spnrdlo and .Aliss Hariand, and the thira by Air. and Mrs. S. E. Sarten; in the final air. H. Alexander and Aliss Hutcheson wore successful. The music provided by Air. Feck, of AA'aitara, was much appreciated by all. Aluch credit was due to Air. Jeffries for the able manner in which,he catered for the gathering, Alr. S. Sarten carried out the duties of AI.C. in his usual capable stylo.
