Mr. 0. N. Firth, who has been laid up for a week or two, is able to get about again.

Sir Joseph Ward has been appointed a colonel in the Second Regiment of the National Reserve of New Zealand. Mr. W. A, Armour, M.A., M.Sc., Principal of the Technical College at Wanganui, has been appointed principal of the Napier Boys’ High School.

At a meeting of tho executive of the New Zealand Alliance, the Rev. W. J. Comrie was re-appointed chairman, and Mr. W. J. Brown honorary treasurer.

The death occurred at Napier early this morning of Mr. E. W. Knowles, formerly proprietor of the Daily Telegraph and managing director of the Press Association, at'"the age of 82. '.Hie appointment of Miss Menzies to the staff of the Technical College 5 as recommended by the Advisory Board, was approved of by the- Education Board at its meeting on Wednesday. The following teachers were granted leave of absence at tho meeting of the Education Board on Wednesday:—Miss S. J. Cameron, Koru; Miss A. M. Giddy. Bird; Miss M. Golding. Kina.

Mr. C. Cuming has resigned from, his position as editor of the Government publication. The Agricultural Journal, and accepted the editorship of The New Zealand fanner. The death is announced of Lieutenant Colonel William. Marvin,, late of the Army Pay Department, who saw service in New Zealand in 1860-1 and in 1863 -1. obtaining the medal. He was in his 81st year. ■

The Rev.- George Bond, one . of the oldest members of the .Methodist ministry in New Zealand, is retiring after forty-four years of aetiv© sendee.' He was the, recipient of an illuminated address and. a cheque for over £9O at Auckland on Monday night. ■ Arising out of the resignation of Mr. H; H. Ostler, senior Crown Law officer, and the promotion, of Mr. P. S. R. Macassey to that position, Mr. V. R. Meredith, of Wellington, has been, appointed to the Crown Law Office, aid will commence his duties on Monday. Mr. Jarafes Thomson, a well-known farmer and public man of the Stratford district,, and a former member of the Harbour Board, having sold a portion of his farm, is about to. take .up his re.sid&ic# in New Plymouth, having purchased a small property at Dartmoor, where he iV building a house.

Mr. John Heslop, of Eltham, who resumed his seat on the Land Board meeting on Wednesday, was welcomed by the chairman (Mr. G. H. Bullard) and other members of the board. With the exception of the one year, owing to his absence abroad, Mr. Heslop has been associated with the Taranaki Land Board for 30 years.

The resignations of the following teachers have been accepted by, the Education Board: —Mr. S. Turkington, head teacher, Huiakama, who retires on superannuation and leaves for England in June: Mr. J. L. Pennington, master, Ahititi. Tongaporutu, who has been accepted for service with the expeditionary force: Airs. E. ..Street', sewing teacher, Tai urutangi; Miss Rowntree. sole teacher. Rowan: Mrs. Wilkes, assistant Ranpnha. The inspectors' recommendations for filling the vacancies advertised were received and adopted.
