AN APPRECIATION. Tho late veteran journalist, Florence MacOaHhy, who passed away recently hi Greymouth at the advanced age of SO, was boj'n in Canada and was of Irish descent. He arrived in Now Zealand during the fifties. ' Long over forty year's ago ho was sub-editor of the Indepeudent, which position' he resigned to join Hansard staff under Mr. Barron. Subsequently ha became editor of the Independent, and for some tame, in conjunction with Captain Holt, carried on the New Zealand Pass Agency. . “Mack,”' as He. waa familiarly called by his Triends,' was over reaily to assist young men.taking up journalism by his friendly, advice, and he was one' of the most popular journalists in the Dominion. Over thirty years ago ho was installed in the editorial chair of the Grey River Argus, which position he held till about a year ago, when he resigned, and till very lately contributed to the columns of the 'Greymouth Evening Star. Being an unassuming man, he never touched oil his Irish lineage; still, like, your erstwhile Inglewood correspondent, the late Sergt. MacCarthy, ho probably was descended from the chieftain Florence MacCarthy Mor, of Muckross, Killarnev. One writer of his obituary remarked that he had not left a-n enemy.
