KOVAL PICTURES. Au exciting and thoroughly interestini' Luhin feature, ’‘Partners in Crime" will he tho chief attraction screened with a new collection of films at the Theatre Royal to-n’ight. The actual partners in crime arc two prominent citizens who do not betray the slightest outward evidence of the prominent part they take in tho depradations ot a dangerous gang of motorbnndits who terrorise the inhabitants of a wealthy suburb in which they operate. The big Luhin feature is accompanied by a choice selection of picture delights. THE EMPIRE THEATRE. Easily among the very host picture entertainments which have been pit; on in New Plymouth is the current show at the Empire Theatre. There are several -tars, but tho brightest ip the constellation' is "In tho Bishop s Carriage.” li is an exciting drama, enacted in bright American fashion. The film covers the story of a girl’s temptation and trial. Nance is a wilful child and is severely beaten at the board-school. At Pennsylvania railway station, lie steals a bag of jewellery and gives it to her to escape with. She gets away, but tho alarm has been raised, and seeing that she is watched, she calmly walks into a bishop’s carriage and thereby allays suspicion. She feigns illness, and is taken by the bishop to a house which is none other than that of the robbed man. Circumstances sot the police on the trail, but she departs by a window just before they arrive, and this time takes refuge in an office of a theatre manager. Seeing the police following as if in search ol someone, the, manager pretends she is learning a part for the stage. When the police leave site agrees to take work as an actress. Her pickpocket acquaintance insists on her return to tho manager’s office to bring away the jewels she left there. Against her will they hmh go. The pickpocket is raptured by the manager, and the police sent ,or. The manager cleverly shields the girl, hut gives the man into custody. tsho commences her stage career, and soon is tempted to misappropriate an actress’s jewels. Con-science-stricken. she rushes with them to the manager, crying; "Why do you place temptation in my way,-’’ The manager again secs her through, and from then on she progresses in her profession. On a night on which she makes a big hit. the released pickpocket appears in her room at the theatre, but is followed in by the manager. whose muscular persuasiveness saves tho situation. Tho last seen of the villain is aboard a steamer on route to India ; the last soon of the manager and Nance is on the pier, locked in each other’s arms, watching tho ship go out. Other capital pictures support the feature item, which will be shown again to-night and to-morrow.
