Mr. Ramsay Macdonald, speaking at Nelson, admitted that Lord Gladstone had been, unable to withhold his sanction of martial law, but suggested that he could have resigned. The Labour Party intended in the present session to introduce amendments oftencr than in any other session, and make demands in connection therewith. If the Government met them, they proposed to withdraw the amendments. If the Tories opposed the withdrawals the Labourites would vote against their own amendments. He added that unless the Labourites got concessions the amendments would be carried to a division. He appealed for a still stronger Labour Party, contending that with 100 members the party ought to be able to rule the House of Commons, and turn out the Government, and enter office. Mr. John Burns, M.P., in a speech at Stockport, said he did not anticipate a general election within 18 mouths. THE ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. (Received Feb. 17, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 16. The House of Commons negatived Bn anti-disestablishment amendment to the address by 279 votes to 217.
