Tho final of tho men’s championship of tho Tarahua Club was played on Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather. ’I ho contestants wore G. Chong and E. P. Loitus, and the former won a fairly close game by 3 up and 2 to play. The course was in excellent order, the greens especially having received careful attention, but the play was hardly up to championship form. Both 'players drove consistently well all tho aliemoon, but it was’ rho work on the green where both failed and ou several occasions were holes thrown away. Notably was this seen on the sixteenth, when Chong was dermy 3. boftus had a 2ft. putt lor a. win—ho could not afford to naive—but ho missed and with that mistake threw away tho chauco of pulling tho game out of tho fire. Loftus played a plucky uphill game and luul his putting—usually one ol his strongest points—bceu up to true form, ho might have made an even harder fight of it. Chong is admittedly tho better player and his win was a ixrpular one. THE PLAY. Loft ns won the toss and drove along ball from tho firs& tee, Chong following with a slightly hotter one. Tho former ran through with his. second, while Chong’s approach was short. Loflns missing an easy putt for a 4 the hole w;is. halved in 5.

Loftus half-topped his second drive and failed to clear tho first gully, while Chong drove another long ball and was through - with his next. Indifferent putting saw Chong win in a 6 to a 7, Chong I up. Chong’s drive for ‘‘Tit-Bits” dropped under tlio fence on-the road and it cost him 3 to get out of his trouble and 4 more to find tho hole. . Loftus got well over the road-and playing safety holed out in G.—All square. Both drives well cleared the gully, Loftus’ -approach being short and Chong’s again just through. Either might have got a -4, but the hole was eventually halved in S. Loftus sent tho longer of two good balls for “Egmont.” Both wero weak with their seconds, and Chong pulling his third ran into an unplayable hole near tho fence and picked up. Loftus, with a magnificent clock shot from long range, found tho green with his third, and went down iu 6.—Loftus 1 up. Driving for the pines Loftus put his too shot into tho hedge and lay on tho road, clearing with his second. Ho met with further trouble, putting his fourth out of bounds, playing a poor fifth, and slicing his sixth down the western gully flicked up. Chong was down in a steady 5.—A1l square. Chong reached the seventh green in 2 and holed out an IStt. putt for a 3. Loftus over-ran with his third and did not play out.—Chong 1 up.

Driving from tho “Kopje” both sent away very long straight balls, and both were on in 3. Chong just missed a long putt for a 4, and went down with his next. Loftus played a weak fourth and lipped tho holo with his next, thus failing to-halve—Chong 2 up. ■ Chong was on tho homo green in 2 to his opponents’ 4, and ho holed out in 4. Loftus-’s putt again lipped tho holo and he was down in 6.—Chong 3 up at the turn.

Starting on tho second round Chong got well on tho way, while Loftus halftopped his drive. By poor seconds and thirds it cost him 6 to go down. Chong just failed to go down with his fourth and made no mistake with his next.— Chong 4 up. Two long drives sailed away for “The Junction,” Chong having a slight slice. A post surrounding tho green had Chong stymied on tho pin. His mashie shot was well directed, but it landed right on top of tho post and bounced into tho rough at the rear of_ the green. Loftus was on in 3 and Join in 5 to a o.—Chong 3 up. Both got well over the road, Chong just, running down the gully to the left. Ho recovered nicely, and lipped a long putt for a four. Loftus had straight sailing and also just failed with his fourth, the holo being halved in 5. No trouble was occasioned in negotiating the gully, and both were handy to the pin in 3. Weak putting saw this holo also halved in o.

Driving for the long hole both started ’ well and good work through the green saw both just outside in 3. Chong missed a long putt for a 5 and was out in 6. Loftus’s green work hero was also weak, the hole costing him 7.—Chong dormy 4. Chong sent another good drive" away for tho fifteenth, while Loftus pulled his and lay in a hoof-mark. Dropping his liall ho got a good ,ho and was handy to tho green, was on in 3 and holed in 5. Chong’s approach shot struck tho fence and this misfortune cost him 6 and the hole.—Chong dormy 3.

Tho next holo proved the deciding one. "Two beautiful balls left the tee, but Ohong, who sent the longer one, mot with more, bad luck by finding his hall under a fence. He recovered nicely and was on the green in 3. -Loftus’s second was short, but with a fino mashie chip ho lay dead in 3. Chong missed a fairly long putt and so what appeared the chance of a half. But Loftus also failed with a simple putt and. so tile holo was after all halved in 5, thus giving vhong the match and the championship hy 3 up and 2 to play.■ The remaining two holes were played out, Chong winning the first in a 5.t0 a 0 and the last being halved in 5. .

Playing at Waiwakaiho during the week-end, All'. Samuel Turner, a visitor from tho Hutt, AVcllington, made a new record amateur score for the Nga Motu links. He returned tho splendid card of 83, while his opponent, AA r . C. AA’eston, equalled tho previous best of 83. .

, An effort is .being made to arrange a match between R. Baily,' this 'year’s champion of tho New Plymouth Club, and 0. Chong, who holds tho premier honours of Tarahua. Both are young and promising players, and the meeting should prove decidedly interesting. It is understood that both are agreeable to tho match.
