Mr. W. M'Lean left Wellington on Friday on a visit to Sydney and Melbourne.

Mr. A. J. W. Johnston, who is now postmaster at Hunterville, is on a short holiday visit to Now Plymouth, after an absence of nearly five years. His Honour Mr. Justice Edwards, who will preside at this week’s sessions of the Supremo Court, arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday night. A Berlin message states that owing to the continued indisposition of the Kaiser’s daughter she will be unable to attend the Duchess of Fife’s wedding.

Mr. Harry Gilbert, who is in tho hospital suffering from a serious illness, has, his many friends will be pleased to hear, turned the corner, and is making satisfactory progress towards recovery.

Captain Waller, harbourmaster, left this morning for Wellington, where he will sit as one of the assessors at the re-hoaring of the inquiry into the stranding of the steamer Devon at Wellington Heads.

A Dunedin telegram states that Dr. Salmond lias notiiied University Council of his resignation of tho chair of mental and moral philosophy, which ho has held thirty years. Dr.-Salmond is nearly eighty years of age. A London cablegram announces the death of Fitzgerald, a Fenian. He was a working compositor in London, and was connected with the abortive insurrectionist movement in 1867, and also participated in the raid on the Canadian frontier.

Tho vicar of St. Matthew’s, Auckland (Rev. W. E. Gillam) has arranged for an exchange of duties with the Rev. A. H. Colvile, vicar of New Plymouth, for three months. Tho exchange will commence on November 16 and last until February 10. Mrs. Colvile, who has recently undergone a severe operation, is now recovering, and it is hoped sho will bo benefited by the change to Auckland.
