LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. IMPROVEMENT IN TARANAKI A DRAWN GAME. SPECIAL TO HERALD. WANGANUI, Sept. 11. Very pleasing indeed, particularly after tho previous displays, was to-day-’s exhibition which Taranaki put,up against a strong Manawatu team. Tho Taranaki forwards played really well and had their share of the ball. They were well supported by their halves,, who kept them well led and it was only the lack of a finer knowledge of tho game when in' the circle that saved Manawatu from a big defeat. Tho backs saved and cleared well, but again tho bright spot, was Alias Arthur in goal, who again brought off some magnificent saves. Manawatu won the toss and commenced by forcing the game into Taranaki’s twenty-five. Taranaki retaliated, however, with a brilliant rush down tho field, which Miss Crawford in tho Manawatu goal was able to stop. Taranaki kept their advantage for some, time, but Manawatn equalised by a very fine passing rush the length of the field. There was a preat tussle in front of the Taranaki goal, but the ball was pushed behind the net. Manawatu’s passing was excellent. Taranaki, however, playing against the wind, still had the better of it. Manawatu again'brought'off a beautiful passing rush down the field, but Miss Arthur rose to tho occasion, turning tho ball round tho post. Tho Manawatu girls again attacked, Miss Collingwood in the lead, and a goal seemed imminent, but Miss Arthur again saved. Taranaki now took the ball to the other end, but the shot missed. The ball was again sent in by Taranaki, but Miss Crawford was there and turned it off. One of Manawatn’s rushes then followed, but they could not break the defence. Again thoy attacked and were likewise unsuccessful. The playing, on both sides was excellent, although Manawatu’s passing was very noticeable. When the whistle blew for half-time Miss Collingwood was just heading another rush for Manawatu. So far there had been no score on cither side. From the bully-off Manawatu attacked and carried trouble into the Taranaki twenty-fivo, but a fmo shot just missed. The play changed ends- for a while, hut Manawatu again rushed the goal. Miss Arthur brought off another of her fine saves! She seemed to bo able to stop anything. Taranaki now forced and tho game changed ends. A beautiful save was brought off by Miss Crawford, who was just able to turn the ball over tho line. Manawatu were, still doing most of the aggressive work. At this stage jHisa M'Ewen, who had been playing a groat game; received a; hit over tho eyo and'had to leave the' field. It was unfortunate for the Taranaki team to lose their captain, but they were still determined not to lose. Both ends of the field now saw the play an j! both goalkeepers had a strenuous time. Taranaki were now brightening np and the Manawatu twenty-fivo became tho scone of the conflict. Miss I. King headed a fiye rush, bnt Miss Crawford was again in evidence. The whistle now blow -and tho game ended with no score on either side. Both teams had put up a good fight and tho result was satisfactory to one side at least. . FEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.
