WELLINGTON MEETING. FIRST DAY. PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July IG. The weather was calm and dull for the opening of the Wellington Jockey Club’s winter meeting. Trial Plate.—Kcw 1, Pa vl T 9y* George 3. Scratched: IMosa, Kidder, Waldemar, Discussion and Tolonc. Won by three lengths, a half-length between second and third. Time, Imiu. 16 3-o sec. _ _ , Steeplechase.—Nedra 1, Tho Spaniard 2, The Native 3. Scratched: Hoanga, who broke down after a gallop this morning, and Fond Memory. A groat race ended in a line finish between the first ami second horses, Nodra winning by a length, The Native throe or four lengths away. There was splendid jumping, and no accidents till tho third round, when Kia Ora foil. Hantere ran off Oarly in tho race. The lost to finish were Red M‘Grcgor, Lcolantcr and Waitarcro. Doraudo was in a good position to tho last fence, when ho ran off. Time, 7min. 7 l-ssec. TARANAKI DISTRICT COMMITTEE. The Taranaki District _ Committee mot last night. Colonel Ellis presiding. There wore also present: Messrs. Newton King, L. A. Nolan, Blundell, Weston, Gray, Pitt, and OrbclL Trainers licenses for tho ensuing season were granted to the following: R. Barlow, J. George, 11. Brough, P. Coffey, O. Cox, J. Fryer and John James. Jockey's licenses were granted to It. Barlow, W. 11. Copestake, T. Jones, W. L. Noddor, and J. 0. M'Carten. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. A meeting of tho Taranaki Jockey Club was held subsequently. The date of the annual meeting of tho club was fixed for Tuesday, July 29, at 8 .p.m. The question of erecting an iron railing fence around the lawn enclosure was held over pending receipt of further particulars. A bonus of £3 3s was granted to the Christchurch Press towards the cpst of the Turf Register. Accounts totalling £6 18s 7d wore passed for payment.
