AMERICAN BOILERS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Having read your article on the Government’s restrictions on foreignmade boilers—inspired by the secretary of the Bonithon Company—l desire to put you right personally on the matter and go further than Mr. Griffiths in that respect. It; is safe to estimate the loss or life, consequent, on boiler explosions in America, as equalling the whole population off Greater Now Plymouth at the prfesent time. Why, Sir, in tho United States during the month of October last there were 54 boiler explosions, nesulting in the death of 20 persons and the maiming of 39 more. lam sure it would tire you looking up the back numbers of the Herald to equal’ that. The inadequacy of the United States law on the above subject is raising quite a storm in that country at tho present time, so ranch so that the authorities have applied to our Chief Surveyor for New Zealand’s rules and regulations pertaining to boiler construction and supervision, and Rre also demanding a greater technical knowledge in those who inspect them. Quito "a . number of English fir mg who construct for the colonial market make boilers to Now Zealand’s specifications. Therefore, as in Mr. Griffiths’ case, there is no trouble when they arrive. Mr. M’Leod has been a long time in tho public life of the Empire .City, therefore ho should have known what to do before embarking on a costly trip, but it is characteristic of Now Zealand companies to gain experience in that way. Finally, 1 will maintain that boilers can bo constructed in the Dominion equally as good, and perhaps cheaper, than, in either Britain or America.—l am, etc., D. K. MORRISON.
