MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

KEENLY CONTESTED LOCALLY. RETIRING MAYOR RE-ELECTED. A DECISIVE MAJORITY, The Municipal elections at New Plymouth, involving contests for the Mayoralty, the Borough Council, and the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, aroused much more interest than usual and all three were keenly contested. Polling was rather quiet during the morning, but as the day advanced the town and suburbs presented a very live appearance, all available .motorcars and cabs having been requisitioned by the respective candidates in order to convey electors to the different polling booths, and in addition a fairly large number of private vehicles wore also placed at the disposal of some of tho candidates. Chief interest centred in tho Mayoral contest between Mr. G. W. Browne, the retiring Mayor, and Mr. J. S. S; Medley, who was also Mr. Browne’s opponent at the previous Mayoral election. On this occasion Mr. Medley had tho official support of the Labour Party, and it was generally anticipated that the poll would. be a very close one —closer than that of last year, when tho voting was 70-1 against 639 in favour of Mr. Browne. This was not so, however, and the retiring Mayor scored a. very decisive victory, his "majority being 570. The detailed figures of the voting are as follow, the figures being given in tho order in which tho results were announced; —

\ Majority for Browne, 570. RETURNING THANKS. Loud applause greeted Mr. Browuo when he made his - appearance at the front of the Town Hall. He briefly expressed his deep appreciation of the renewed expression of confidence in his administration on the part of tho electors, and the splendid majority shown in his favour. Ho assured all of his intentions immediately to push on tho tramway scheme. With regard to his candidature for .the Hospital Board, he felt it to bo only a right and proper thing, in view of its heavy contributions to the board’s funds, for tho Borough Council to be directly represented, and so able to watch that expenditure. Again thanking the electors, tho Mayor said that one thing ho could assure them was that when ho “handed over” tho town to them again it would be as clean ns it was mow. , : Mr. Medley thanked all those who had cast their votes in Ids favour. He was sorry to say that he had been “done Brown” (laughter), but, ho said, no harm had been done, and he hoped Mr. Browno would como up to tho scratch again. This Mr. Browno assured his hearers ho would do, whereupon Mr. Medley remarked that he had been scratched this time. “My only aim in standing,” continued tho defeated candidate, “was for the " progress of the town, and I shall continue to do everything in my power towards that end.” He concluded by saying he had failed, but that liis, committee and supporters had put up a good fight, and he was pleased that the contest had been friendly and without any personalities. (Applause.) Ho took this opoprtunity of thanking his committee for all it had done in furthering his candidature, and again thanked those who had voted for him. Hearty cheers wore given for the Mayor and Mr. Medley.
