EXPANSION AND TOURIST LEAGUE.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE.

A committee meeting of the 1 Now Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League was held on Monday, A letter was read from the manager of the Northern Steamship Company, stating that one of the chief attractions of the district was tho Mountain Hostel, but that owing to the heavy expense of getting there, only people of means were, able to avail themselves of the resort. “If it were possible,” he wrote,! “to get tho faro down to, say, los, many more people would visit the mountain. We hear of quite a number of people who declined.to,go when they were informed of tho cost of getting to and from tho house.” It was stated that several other letters had been received on this subject, commenting on tho excessive cost of hiring vehicles for tho trip. The matter will be taken up next season. A letter was read from the Government Tourist Department, stating its willingness to hang groups of pictures illustrative of the attractions of the district in tho offices of the department at Wellington and Auckland, and offering to distribute any literature on tho subject which might be supplied by tho league, provided that business advertisements did not preponderate. . It expressed itself as anxious to do anything possible to help the league in its objects. Messrs. Thomas Cook and Co. wrote in a similar strain.

The league is endeavouring to have New Plymouth included in tho tourist itinerary during tho Auckland Exhibition, and satisfactory replies have been received from the different departments approached on the subject. Loavo of absence was granted to Mr. K. Webster, who is leaving for America in a few weeks.
