THE HEROINE OF TARANAKI
Chatting •to Mr. J. Andrews this morning concerning the article which appeared in the Herald a few days ago and the Budget of last week under the heading “The Heroine of Taranaki,’’ one of our representatives gleaned a few interesting particulars. The name of the family suffering from fever, it appears, was Foreman, and came into town from Tataraimaka. They lost three or four children, and the mother also contracted the fever and died. Then the father and the remainder of the family were taken out to Te Henui, a mile outside the lines, all suffering from typhoid, Mr. Andrews’ mother and Mrs. Lee (nee Mary Collins), a girl in her teens, going out to nurse them. At Te Hcmn another little girl died, and Mr. Andrews helped to carry her to her grave in St. Mary’s-Churchyard. After the family had been at Te Henui some little time they were brought into town a-rain, and Mr. Andrews’ mother took charge of the two youngest children, and when the women were ordered to Nelson they went with her. Mrs. Andrews remained in charge or the cnildren whilst she was away at Nelson, and on her return to New Plymouth brought them back with her, , and continued to keep them until such time as the father was able to find a home for them a year or two afterwards. Mrs. T. Julian, of Warea, was one of the children.
