CARNEGIE INSTITUTE.

AW UAL MEETING. There was not a large attendance at the annual meeting, held on Friday evening, ot subscribers to the library at the Carnegie Institute. The choirman of the committee (.Mr. F. E. Wilson), in moving the, adoption of the report and balauce-tiheet, as published in the Herald on Friday, said that ho thought the committee had financed their affairs very successfully, considering the fact that the council’s subsidy had boon reduced by £SO last year, ’i be new arrangement with the council, by which £IOO and the Government subsidy was earmarked to be spent on hooks and magazines, would prove much more satisfactory than the old one, under which books could only be bought after a great number of other charges had been defrayed. A short discussion took place with reference to the small number of subscribers to the library, it being pointed out that the number was not ecpml to four out of every 100 adults who lived within easy, reach of the library. No satisfactory measure was suggested for increasing the interest in intellectual affaire, the impression being that New Plymouth people wore sleeping too soundly to be aroused. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and Messrs. R. O. Whetter, P. White, G. H. Dolby, and the Rev. J. W. Burton were appointe'd to represent the subscribers on the committee. Tho Borough Council also elects four members.
