BETTING IN AUCKLAND.
CONVICTIONS AND FINES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 19. Further betting raid cases were dealt with to-day. ’1 ho hearing of tho charge against John Ryan, that, being the occupier of a billiard room in Vulcan Lane he received moneys as bets and kept premises for the purpose of betting, was continued. .Uteri, lengthy argument and evidence the Magistrate said that he- bad decided to convict. The amount of the fine was not to be taken as showing that Ryan was less guilty than others. He was making allowance for Ryan’s poorer circumstances, and for the fact that he would suffer very serious loss through the almost certain loss of his billiard license. A fine of £SO and costs was inflicted. On a charge of keeping a gaming house and on a charge ot making bets Ryan was convicted and ordered to come up fori sentence when called upon. Four persons for being found on the premises were fined £1 each. Fred. Williams and Charles Darcy, two reputed bookmakers, who pleaded guilty, were fined £25 each, with costs.
