THE DEFENCE ACT.

MINISTER’S. VIEWS APPPROVED. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N-, April 16. There was some discussion on the Defence Act at a general meeting of members of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last evening, and on the motion of the president, Mr. M. A. Elliott, seconded by Captain Preece, the following resolution was earned without a dissentient voice: That this chamber desires to express its appreciation of the attitude shown by the Minister of Defence in connection with hia expressed intention of enforcing the law relating to the compulsory provisions of the Defence Act; and that this resolution be forwarded to other chambers and local bodies in the Dominion, with the request that they shall endorse, the same if it meets with their approval. Mr. Elliott said that the new Minisier’s attitude was strong, resourceful and reasonable. Ninety-nine per cent, of the people of the Dominion were in favour of the Act, but the small minority opposed to it endeavoured, by making a great noise, to make it appear that the majority was in opposition. It was one of the finest Acts ever placed on the Statute Book.
