ORGANISING POR A GENERAL ELECTION. A MINISTERIAL HOSTAGE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, April 15. During the Easter week, a large gathering of the Maoris of Tokaanu and surrounding districts, belonging to Te Heuheu’s tribe, was held at Mokai. Te Heuheu himself was present, and addressed the assemblage. During the coure of his oration, he said he had been commissioned by Sir Jas. Carroll and Mr. Ngata, to go round and explain why these two gentlemen had resigned from the Ministry. He said they had done it to save the ship. That was why they left the Government, but they still held th powr ovr the new Ministry, and Te Rangihiroa (Dr. Buck) was only in it, not exactly on sufferance, but as a hostage. _ If the new Cabinet did not do the bidding of Carroll and Ngata, out would go Mr. Rangihiroa. Sir Jas. Carroll and Mr. Ngata, he further explained, had asked him to organise the Natives for the next general election. He urged them to be in readiness, because there would be another general election shortly.
