DENBIGH ROAD

(From a Correspondent.) A very enjoyable picnic, with sports combined, was held last Thursday in Mr. J, Kilpiyg s paddock, kindly lent for the occasion. All hands conspired to do their best to help tho Denbigh Road Athletic Club in their ell ores to make tho affair a success, and their work was crowned with success. Mr. and Mrs. Hine were present, and helped us along with their cheerfulness and sociability. To Mrs. Hine belongs the distinction of winning the ladies’ nail-driving competition from about 30 contestants, ’the prize was handed over to the children's prize money by Mrs. Hine. There were a great many events for the young people, and these were eagerly competed for, each youngster receiving a substantial reward. The young ladies' race was won by Miss Vickers, Miss Morton coming second. Mrs. Adlam succeeded in carrying off the married ladies’ race, with Mrs. G. Adlam second. In tho men’s events the maiden race was won hy B. Nostruaki I, F. Bcesby 2. 100 yards handicap, G. An-derson-1, B. N'ostruski 2. 220 yards, 13. Nostruski 1, F. Fisher 2, 440 yards, W. Norton 1, G. Anderson 2, C. Carroll 3. No. 1 saw (open), F. Askew and M. Luders 1, Potrodz Bros. 2. No. I saw (open), G. Nostruski and mate I, C. Carroll and A. Askew 2. Local .•hop, W. Ncilson 1, M. Luders 2. Open chop, J, Potrodz 1, C. Voltzki 2. J. Irstead 3. -Mr. Adlam managed lo step tho chain, and C. Carroll to come off victorious in the wrestling, catch-as-catch-can. Altogether tho most successful, the day was beautifully fine, and the financial view is encouraging, and the committee find they have a little sum over cle,ar of all expenses, and they purpose holding a social and dance on Friday evening, the 26th iust., when a good crowd is expected. Mr, L. Lyford, hon. secretary to tho athletic club, is to be complimented on his energy in helping things to go, also Air. B. Carroll as starter and general factotum, with Messrs. Hucstep, Kelly and Mead, as handicappors. Air. A. Voltzki had the chopping and sawing events under his able management, and ho and his brother afterwards gave an exhibition saw, which was quite a feature of the entertainment. The management committee wore Alessrs. VV. Norton. C. Carroll, W, Mills, VV. Alole, F. and A. Askew, AI. Luders, H. Huckstep, G. Fergusson. L. Lyford and G. Anderson. The district is enjoying a spell of mild weather at present. The death occurred on Sunday last, the 7th lust., of a very old resident in the person of-Mrs. Shnmacher, who had reached the ripe ago of eighty-four.
