THE BROTHERHOOD

ITS OBJECTS EXPLAINED

On Sunday afternoon of May 4, the first meeting in connection with tilt 1 New Plymouth Brotherhood will be held at the Good Templar Had. These Brotherhoods are -moving rapidly in Britain and America towards bringing together all classes of men, irrespective of creed, whose outlook on life stands for something more than the material. Put epigrammatically. it is “the union of all who serve in tho service of all who suffer.’’ It aims to hold out a helping hand to every man, and by providing a bright, attractive meeting on Sunday afternoons for men only, to do something to assist each temporarily, spiritually, intellectually and socially. Speaking at South Norwood recently, Air. C. Silvcrston Horne, ALA., ALP., said he believed out of the Brotherhood meetings would come in tho future more and more of the leaders of civic and municipal life—men who would sit in Parliament. The Brotherhood kept close to the actualities of life. The churches, and ho said it with all respect, had not got close to life. Religion had been "nearly killed hy conventionalities. The laymen had been silent too long. This re-habilitation of Christianity, this return to the, real primitive thing of fishermen, tax gatherer, tent maker, and the like, was going to be one of the greatest blessings in its history. It was a coming together in simple societies of men anxious tn give a more practical turn to Christianity. The Christian Saint was not the man who had never mixed with the world, but rather he who showed hy face and hands that he had taken his share in the hard work of life, and had not done it all for self, hut for other people too. Already numerous promises of assistance as speakers, etc., have come from all parts of the country, and a provisional committee has been set up. of which the Rev. J. W. Burton is convenor.
