MR. MACKENZIE A STOP-GAP

THE OPINION OF MR. COLVIN. Per Press Association. HOKITIKA, April 10. The Hon. Jas. Colvin, Minister of Mines, was met to-night by a deputation from the Westland County Council in respect to a number of local requirements. All the matters brought under his notice, he said, would receive his favourable consideration and attention. In the course of his reply to expressions of welcome to the district the Minister said that ho was of opinion that the Ministry was an able, thoroughly honest and straightforward one. He predicted that Mr. Payne and other Labour members would vote with the present Government for the.next three years, and that if there was' an appeal to the country before then he believed the present Government would go back with a failmajority, and that Sir Joseph Ward would yet be asked to again lead the Liberal' Party. Mr. Colvin leaves tomorrow morning for Greymouth, wh.ere he is to be entertained in the cvening.
