RHODES SCHOLAR, 1912.
MR. ALAN WALLACE, OF AUCKLAND. Mr. Alan Wallace, of Auckland University College, has been selected as the New Zealand Rhodes Scholar for 1912. The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee met on Wednesday morning, there being present: His ExoeilenGovernor (Lord Islington), chairman, the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), Mr. Justice Chapman, Professors Dettmanu (Auckland). Hunter (Wellington), Evans (Christchurch), and Marshall (Dunedin). Mr. B. Hector (Registrar of the University of New Zealand), was also present as secretary of the Rnodes Trust in New Zealand. The candidates nominated by the four University centres were: Messrs. Alan Wallace (Auckland), Frederick George Hall-Jones (Wellington), Lancelot Shadwell Jennings (Canterbury), and Montague Ongloy (Otago). Mr. Alan Wallace, tho selected candidate, is tho fourth Rhodes scholar from Auckland during the last five years, and is the youngest student yet selected to represent the Dominion, being not yet twent»one. Fie was born in Auckland in April, 1891, entered Auckland Grammar School as a Foundation Scholar in February, 1903, and he had n brilliant career at the school, winning many prizes, chiefly in mathematics, science and languages. He won a senior district scholarship, and a senior national scholarship, and in 3907 a junior university scholarship, in which he was second in the Dominion. At Auckland University College lie won the Sir George Grey Scholarship in chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy, and three Senior University Scholarships in pure mathematics, mechanics, and chemistry, lie took his B.A. in 1010, and sat for honours in November Inst in mathematics and chemistry. In college examinations hd took first place in mathematics, mechanics, and chemistry respectively, and third place in Latin and French. In the field of athletics it is chiefly as a cricketer that tho successful candidate is distinguished. Flo represented Auckland province last season, and had the second highest batting average in the Auckland district. Ho has also played Association football. Ho has also played a leading part in his college life, being secretary and president of the Students’ Association, and president of the Men’s Common Room Club.
