WAITARA HARBOUR BOARD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.’) At the ordinary meeting of tlie above board there were present: Mess s. \\ . F Jenkins (chairman). Hinc. -.cks. Birthing. Jennings, Rattenbmy and Smith. N CORRESPONDENCE. From Messrs. A. Hatriok and Co., re payment to tho Railway Department of cost of laying down siding to the firm’s warehouse.. They claimed that the board had agreed that there would be no cost, except tlie ordinary annual siding charge of the department. After discussion it was resolved that Messrs. Hatrick and Co. be informed that the board, in face of legal advice, could not alter its previous resolution. From Mr. Leslie Reynolds re the erection of weir, asking when same was to be decided upon, so that he could make a start with the design. It was announced by the chairman that the Bank of Dow Zealand had replied to the board’s request for a loan to tho following effect; “That while it was legal to borrow; to the extent of the previous year's revenue, the bank would have to decline to make the advance the hoard required, seeing tlie nresent large liability for old loans and interest." In the face of this reply, said the chairman, th 'matter must bo left in abeyance in the meantime. Mr. Hino said ho regretted that the chairman's faith in the benevolence of banks had been so rudely shattered. In Mr. Rattenbury’s opinion, with economy, tho board would be able to put tlie work in baud in about twelve months’ time. In answer to a question from Mr. Hine, as to whether the board were of the opinion that the work could be clone for £SOOO, tho Chairman said that they had (ho oninion of Mr. Leslie Reynolds to that effect. It was decided to let the matter pf the erection of the weir stand over in tlie meantime. From tite secretary of the Taranaki Fish Co., of Kawhia, re payment of wharfage on empty fish cases. The Secretary mentioned that he. was charging according to the by-laws, viz., half rates. No action was taken. TENDERS. Tenders were received ns under for the exclusive right of removing shingle from the beach; John Coleman, £2l for north-east side and £ll south-west side; Tate and Co., £2O for the northeast ami £lO for south-west, Mr. Coleman’s tender was accepted. OLD LOAN. Mr. Jennings said that ho thought something might lie done in connection with an effort to get rid of the -Id loan liability. Ollier boards, bo said,, were in a similar position to the 'Waitara Board, nod if joint action were taken in the direction of urging upon whatever Oovernmenf was in power to give those boards affected a release, lie thought it would ho a step in tlie right direction. The position of hoards owing money on account of old loans was at present hampered, so that, if the Government recognised tho position something'might be clone. In any ease no harm could be done by setting up a committee of inquiry, and he would move in that direction. The members of the hoard were of opinion that the proposal was a good one, and would move in that direction. The members of the hoard were of opinion that the proposal was a good one, and it was adopted. ACCOUNTS. Accounts were passed for payment. This concluded the business. MAIL NOTICES.
