FIFTY YEARS AGO.

TARANAKI’S EARLY HISTORY. (From tlie Taranaki Herald, ISGI.) Saturday. Dec. 14.—The last overland mail from Auckland brings no favourable account of the ‘disposition of the Upper Waikato tribes. They have refused cither to visit the Governor, or to meet him in Lower Waikato, whither his Excellency was proceeding by appointment. They add that, if the Governor has any proposal to make, ho knows the mad to their district. In tlie face of these discouragements. his Excellency is' industriously circulating his proposals amongst the Natives of New’Zealand for their future Government. The Lord Worsloy brought the appointments of Messrs. H. A. Atkinson. G. R. Burton and W. J-lalso to conduct certain inquiries commoted with the Taranaki Relief Fund, previous to its distribution. The board commenced its riitings yesterday. Thu claims preferred under before the .Military Board last April for loss and injury occasioned to private properly by order of tlie military authorities during tho commands of MajorGeneral Gold and Pratt, are. it seems, as far off being settled as ever. Some of tlie earlier claimants worn paid on presenting their accounts at Brigade Office, but the military authorities would seem to have taken alarm at the extent of the claims, and payment was suddenly stopped. It is* rumoured that Lieut.-General Cameron. C. 8.. and Staff mav be expected here almost immediately on a abort visit. We are sorry to hear that wo Midi shortly lost, two more companies of the o7th. who are under orders for Wanganui in tlm coming week, under command of Major Hnssnrd. It is stated that the detachment of the doth, a: present at. Wanganui, will take their place, and remain Imre until relieved hv a detachment of the 14th from Auckland, At a meeting of the New Plymouth Friondlv Society, held *>n tlie 10th inst., nt the Masonic Hotel.
