PALMERSTON NORTH v. NEW ' PLYMOUTH. A debate and social* took place at Messrs. May ...and Arrowsmith’s tea rooms on Friday, at 7 p.m., whore the local High School boys entertained the the yisiftilg;fbbt.balT Kearns from Napier and Palmerston North. The donate was between Palmerston North and New Plymouth, and was the first item on tho programme. Tho former proved victorious. Mr. H. Eyrekcnily had charge of the proceedings. The subject for the debate was ‘‘That civilisation has been 'conducive to the happiness of mankind.” The affirmative speakers were Messrs. Barrowclongh (leader) and Low. For the negative Messrs. Grey (leader) and Day. At the conclusion of the debate Mr. H. Eyrc-Kenny gave some closing remarks on the subject, and announced that) th.e Palmerston boys had • won.1 The second part. of the’programme was, devoted .to a; social, during which refreshments were provided. The toasl of the King was first honoured, and them that of the yisitors. Several members of the Board of Governors gave short and interesting speeches. The programme was ns follows: Violin solo, Mr. Box 1 ; song, “'The Bassoon,” Mr. Gill; song, ‘The Ole Umbrella, Mr. Luxford,; recitation, “Late Mrs. ’Odgson’s Funeral,” Mr. Wills; song, ’Mr.’'Wills- and chorus first fifteen; pianoforte solo, Mr, Philpott; recitation, “The Red Fiend,”Mr. H. Barrowolough; song,: “Tromw bone,” Mr. Wills, Mr. Wills’s singing and recitations wore very much appreciated by the audience, as was shWn. by the fact that he received very hearty ericorei on every occasion.
