“Familiar as household words in the mouths” of the people of New Zealand has been the name of Captain Edwin, whose death is announced to-day, at the age of 71 years.' He was a native of Dorsetshire, aud entered the Royal Navy as a naval cadet in 1853. He was a midshipman on board H.M.S. Albion in the action between the combined British and French fleets and the forts of Sebastopol on October 17. 1854. Subsequently he joined H.M.S. Elk as a midshipman, and was present during operations in Canton River and at the capture of Canton on December 29, 1837 He also served in New Zealand in the Maori war in the early sixties. He retired from' Royal Naval active service in February. 1871, and entered the Civil Service of New Zealand. In 1874 ho was appointed weather reporter, and later was placed in charge of the Meteorological Office until his retirement a year or two ago.
