OKATO.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 13.—The retiring Hall Committee brought down quite a respectable balance sheet at the adjourned annual meeting on Saturday night last. The total income, including £2O received for the old piano, amounted to over £73, while the expenses of management, etc., amounted to £33 odd. The now piano cost £57, £29 of which has been paid, leaving a debt of £2B to be paid during the current year. There is a credit cash balance in bank and in hand of £l4, which speaks well for the way. the affairs have been managed, considering the three previous balances have been on the wrong side of the ledger. Sir. Richards, the secretary, was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his past services, but efforts to induce him to act for another year proved unavailing. Some of the old committee also had had enough of it, and the following were elected from those in the room; D. P. Evans, T. Street, W. A. Lind, H. A. Corbett, F. Jenkins, E. Malone, J. Clark, 0. Penwarden and J. Wooldridge. Air. Evans was subsequently elected chairman and T. Street secretary. The Sports Club have received intimation from the Athletic Association that no action will bo taken in the protest against Poki Matene, and that the prize money be paid out accordingly and that the protest against Heta Piripi has not yet been definitely settled. There was quite a record attendance of buyers at Air. A. Alexander’s sale of stock and implements to-day, and prices for the time of year seemed very good, with here and there a decided snip or two. .Nothing seoms to appeal to the youth and beauty of Okaio like a good dance, consequently there was a bumper house at the spinsters’ and bachelors’ ball held to-night. Invitations were strewn about with a lavish hand, bringing visiters from between Oaoiuii and Oakura some probably for the first time testing the hospitality of Okato friends, or skipping with nimble feet over, what is about the best floor on the coast. Aliss Francos Andrews and Air. H. A. Corbett were creditable joint secretaries, and seemed to have arrangements well in hand. The music was supplied.by Airs. George’s orchestra, Air. Von Lubbe taking the place of Mr. Chong.
