PILFERING AT HAWERA.

RAILWAY SERVANTS SENTENCED. Per Press Association. HAWERA, Oct. 27. For some time there have boon complaints of alleged pilfering at Hawora railway goods shod. The police set a watch on Saturday and obtained information which led to the suspension of two portens and a clerk. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Norman Lawrence Wild, clerk, Leonard Gilbert and Emile Fiacix Davey, porters, pleaded guilty to stealing from the goods shod two hams and a miscellaneous collection ot drapery to the total values of £7. Detective Siddohs prosecuted and pointed out the enormous losses occasioned as tho result of thefts from stations It appeared that accused were on the late shift and left the shed about 10 o’clock returning later on and opening travellers’ samples and taking goods therefrom, together with the hams. Counsel for accused applied for probation. The Alagistrato, Mr. Kcnrick, was oppose.d to probation when offences of the nature before the court were committed by persons holding positions of trust, and accused were sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment.
