The poetry which secured the second prize in Mr. C. Carter’s Golden Gift Tea competition will bo found in outadvertising columns. The tourist season on the AVanganui River has, we are advised, started earlier Ilian usual, and a much larger number of tourists are doing this now favourite excursion than on any previous season at this time of the year. Tho river at present is seen at its best. From now until January tho native flowering trees are in bloom. Just now the wealth of yjllow (old gold) kowhai appears to bo unusually brilliant in colour and in great profusion. The native clematis is also in bloom, as are also the rangiora, ake ako, and rama ruma. Tho giant ratas also give : . gts of early bloom. The pleasure of coursing along the river for upwards of 103 miles with the high hillsides clothed in these beautiful and brilliant Now Zealand flowering shrubs is something to impress and live in tho memory of those who are privileged to make tho trip. Rhubarb Pic.—Rhubarb is now in season, and the following recipe will be found very useful; —Make a good rich pie paste and do not roll out very thin. To three cupfuls of finely cut rhubarb, add one and a half cupfuls sugar, lots of butter, and sift a little flour on the top. Wet top of crust with milk, press edge of pie down well; then take a strip of cotton two inches wide and lung enough to go round the edge of pic and tic it. AA’et the cotton in cold water, not wringing it out before putting it on. This will prevent any juice running out. In preparing the rhubarb do not peal it, simply cut in small squares and wash well. This gives it that rich red colour which cannot bo secured if it is peeled. Rhubarb at this time of year is particularly healthful ami should be eaten freely. Tea is drunk with almost every meal nowadays, and those who know anything alxmt tea will readily recommend the New Crescent Blend at 2s per lb. It is a perfect blond of the strong robust tens of Darjeeling and tho fine delicate teas of Ceylon. It is rich and strong, with a fetching fragrance, and a palatepleasing flavour. It is one of the best, indeed tho very best 2s tea on tho market. Proem ah'..- from most storekeepers in (he district.
