THE LATE SERGT. APPLEYARD.

The funeral of the late Sergeant Appleyard took place at tho To He* nui ccmetary yesterday afternoon. , Jt was attended by about 20 veterans under Lieutenant J ; C. Davies. In® Bearers wore Sergeant Duffm, Bugler Mynott, Sergeant Tunbridge, Captain G. Cock, V.D., Privates J. (PDonnell and IV. King. The Rev. J. Guy con* ducted tho service. The late Sergeant Appleyard was a native ol Yorkshire, and entered the scrivce of the Crown in 1845, having on March 1 of thot voar joined the 70th -Keglmont of the line, then quartered at Manchester, and served with it in Ireland during the troubles of 1848 and 1849. On January 15, 1849, he embarked with the headquarters of the regiment from Queenstown, Ireland, for India, where he served till 1001, being on service all through the mutiny, for which he received a ribbon and medal. He was on duty m Peshawar and witnessed the execution or the ringleaders of the mutinous 55th Native Infantry, when Sergeant Sydney Cotton had 86 of the men blown from the cannon’s mouth at the samo time, causing 36 to be executed by banging. These drastic measures had the effect of entirely crushing tho mutiny in tho North-west, and deterring the Afghans from their meditated attack on the British frontier regiments, "Whilst on night, duty from Peshawar a night attack was made on the party by the Hill tribes, and Sergeant Appleyard was severely wounded in the groin by a lance thrust. Sergeant Appleyard , left India for New Zealand in 1861, landing at Auckland on June 19 of the same year. He wont through the Waikato war under General Cameron, at the close of which ho came to this district. Hostilities again broke out in South. Taranaki in May, 1863, and Scrjieant Appleyard took part in most of the engagements that followed, both in North and South Taranaki, for which ho received a medal. Tho regiment being under orders to return to England, Sergeant Appleyard took his discharge in March, 1886, having served over 21 years with tho 70:b, (for which he received tho long service medal) and ho had resided in New Plymouth since.
