PUNIWHAKAU.
(From Our Own Corresnondent.) Feb. 9.—-Mr. P. Houlahan, who has obtained the contract for metalling tho Mnngehu and Pnniwhakau Hoads, has already commenced operations. Ho has a gang of men employed in opening up a large metal (shell rock) pit near Mr. J. Hedge's homestead. Tho paddock adjoining is a veritable “canvas town.” Some “Weary Willies” received a surprise last week. They were working on the metal contract, and it was very noticeable that when the boss was out of sight tho disease was worst. Tho boss, hearing of this, appeared unexpectedly one day, and gave tho tired ones a long holiday. Owing to tho showery weather experienced of late shearing has been unduly delayed. It is about completed now. Several good burns have been obtained in'spite of the weather, ami seedsowing is being hurried on. Our sheep should fetch good prices, as there is a large area down in turnips in this part, and there is an abundance of grass, I see tho Stratford County Council has given orders to prosecute persons whoso cattle (including calves) are found wandering on tho county roads. Why not include pigs and horses? For my part, I think it improves tho look of the roads to have the rubbish and rank grass oaten down, especially in bush districts. Tntutawa will hold its annual sports and picnic in Mr. Walker’s paddock on Thursday next. Given a fine day there should be a largo attendance.
