NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The final of the Now Plymouth Club’s ladies’ handicap singles was played on Saturday, when Miss Brewster (owe 15) defeated Miss M. Thomson (owo 8), 56—54. As the score indicates, tho match was a very close quo,and although Miss Thomson early established a load she was gradually overhauled by her opponent, and when the match ended only two points separated the players. The contest was noticeable for some long and exciting rallies, which vtre brought about by steady play by both Miss Brewster and Miss Thomson. At the end of the second service bliss Thomson was leading by 18 points t0,9,’ but in tho next delivery bliss Brewster obtained a substantial gain, winning eight points against her opponent’s two and so reduced the difference to tincc. An equally strong reply by Miss Thomson was reciprocated when bliss Brewster next served, and so the game progressed, each player winning on her service. After the eighth service, Miss Thomson was loading by seven, tho score being 47—40, but from bfiss Brewster’s racquet were now delivered a number of winning shots, and when the balls were exchanged she' was loading by one point, 54—53. Miss Thomson’s first service ended in her favour—s4 all. But the next two points wore won by Miss Brewster and so the match.
