AUSTRALIANS v. WELLINGTON. POOR BATTING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. Magnificent weather prevailed for the match between the Australian team and Wellington. The wicket was in excellent order and the outfield fast. About 2000 spectators watched proceedings. r Wellington won the toss, and elected to bat, but made a sorry display. The only serviceable stand was made by Patrick and Roberts for the ninth wicket, saving the team from complete rout. Patrick (2d) executed some wrist y, forceful strokes. Roberts played soundly for 17. Blacklock con- , tributed 14 and Midlane 10. The innings closed for 107. Whitty secured three wickets for 10 runs,-Emery two for 48, Facy two for, 7, Kellaway two for 10, and. Simpson one for 5. Whitty bowled splendidly. At the close of the day Auckland’s score stood at 391 for six wickets. The batting was at times brilliant, the runs made by Hemus (109) and Relf (118) being compiled by cohrect and stylish play. There was considerable interest in Macartney’s appearance at the bowling crease, but'up to a certain period the Aucklanders not only played him with confidence but scored freely off him. AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. The -Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Otago was resumed in fine weather. At the end of forty minutes’ play Auckland bad scored 433 for the loss of seven wickets. Sale had made 79, whilst Sneddon was caught by Macartney and bowled by M'Farlane when his score read 24. The wicket showed but few signs of wear. Fisher is still unwell but took the field again. [Macartney and Downes opened the attack. Sneddon was twice beaten by Macartney, but tbo ball missed the wickets. Runs came slowly, mostly in singles.
