The barque Penrhyn Castle, which arrived from London during the weok and had only yesterday completed the discharge of 2000 packages of powder, was discovered to ho on fire to-day. The fire started in the forehold among a quantity of pottery and other cargo loosely packed with straw. It quickly gained such headway that it was decided to tow the vessel to Rose Bay and beach her. A steamer started to tow her. In the meantime holes were cut in the decks. The fire boat Pluvius arrived, and so effectively poured in water that by tho time the tow reached Shark Island the fire was checked. Tho barque then anchored, and tho firemen soon mastered the outbreak. The damage was chiefly confined to ’tween decks and the lower hold. Much of tho cargo was saturated. There is two feet of water in tho hold.
