FREE RA IL WAY PASSES. REFUSED TO SCHOOL TEACHERS.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 15. The decision of the Minister for Railways to withdraw the railway concessions at present granted to school terchers attending training classes was discussed at to-day's meeting of the Auckland Education Board. The notification from the department was to the effect that at th« end of the present month the issue of free passes would cease. It would still be open to the board to apply for concessions for teachers attending conferences or Mr. F. O. Purdie said he considered the matter a serious one. It was, in Fact, an outrageous step to take. He moved that a stiwig letter of protest be sent to the Minister for Education and the Minister for Railways. There were, he added, 102 teachers ' in the Auckland district availing themselves of these concessions. , >fr.' Edgecumbe, in seconding, said it w«e a preposterous proposal. One department was doing all it could for education, and the other was doing all it could to nullify those efforts. Mr. Garland said they ««ver knew what to expect next from the Minister far Railways, in his desire to make the' railways pay. It would be a grievous thing if this proposal were put into force.
