Tho Taranaki Rilles hold Uio.ii usual inspection parade last night when there was a very good muster. After the parade members of the Company who attended the Easter Camp received their personal payment Preliminary arrangements wore made tor the annual ball on May 24. Lieut. A rifle match will be fired on Saturday between recruits of the Ritlos rtnd Guards. At the same time the Rifles will fire the first competition for tho Company championship and the competition for tho wedding ring, tho latter competition being concluded on Saturday.

A largo staff of workmen arc engaged in clearing up the debrt-s left by the fire in the Herald premises, and Mr Cliff has the frame up of a temporary building to bo used as a printing room.

The first practice of the Choral Society formed by Mr V. Cornwall was held in the Queen Street schoolroom last evening. There, were present over thirty members, although several intending members wore unavoidably al>sont. Sunif. good work ■was done, tl'e efforts being devoted to .Schumann's "Gipsy Life." which it is intended to render with full orchestral support. In a few remarks appropriate to the opening night, Mr Cornwall said that lie thought it was time that the tow n had some organisation of the kind.
